The Shopping Meme!


Maybe they've been sent to do the shopping, or maybe your character works there. Perhaps they just want to browse the snacks or play with the pets! Either way, your characters are braving the long aisles or open air chaos that makes up the shopping world - please keep both hands inside the meme, and remember to use the buddy system if you get lost!

Everyone knows how to work these things, so here is your obligatory RNG link; post! roll! be merry!


1. grocery store
Sent to do the shopping, eh? Or maybe you need snacks for movie night! Whatever your needs, there's all kinds of food here, from fresh produce to the junkiest of junk foods! Careful not to knock over the soup cans!

2. farmer's market
Ah, the farmer's market - fresh open air, the smell of amazing, home grown vegetables - and bargains as far as the eye can see! Everything here is always cheaper than at the stores, so remember to pick up lots of milk!

3. pet store
How much is that puppy in the window?? Why not go in and find out! There's every animal here, from snakes to birds to ferrets - or maybe you come from a more exotic world? Careful around the mooselion pen, and remember - don't hurt the cuccos!

4. magic shop
Alakazam! The most interesting store in town - from card tricks to silk hats, this store promises to tickle your fancy! Ever want to learn magic tricks? This store has all sorts of beginners kits for prestidigitation!

5. clothes store
Wow, you look like someone from What Not to Wear! Good thing you've got a good buddy on hand who's willing to dress you up like a Barbie doll - or maybe you need some new clothes after that last battle! There's plenty of changing rooms for showing off outfits to your crush, too; but don't go overboard!

6. gift shop
From tacky mugs to cute postcards, snowglobes to pins, this tourist trap is a given in any big town or little city! Don't forget your keychains, and remember - you break it, you buy it!

7. bazaar
A theif's paradise, the bazaar is filled with just about anything - from the mundane to the just plain freaky! Are you here for the potions stall? Or maybe you need an herb you can't get anything else? Or maybe you just want to poke at the organ seller's shrunken heads!

8. cafe
Mm, the smell of coffee permeates pretty much everything here! What a great way to wake up before a big game, or maybe you're on a date! There's muffins, energy drinks, even mugs and thermoses with the cafe's name on it, and even though ordering coffee can be confusing, it's all garaunteed to be tasty! This triple grande mocha breve with a shot of cream is handmade, just for you!

9. obligatory zelda option
Need a new shield? Or maybe there's a new mask in store! You've found yourself in the castle market in Hyrule's prime, where you can buy or sell just about everything - and even play some games! Wanna try your hand at some archery? Or maybe play some Bombchu Bowling? And don't forget to help out the banker when you can!

10. mall
This place is your one stop shop for everything - candy stores, clothes stores, video games, even food courts and maybe a carousel! Don't get lost!

11. toy store
TOYS TOYS TOYS! Card decks, plushies, action figures - you name it, it's here! Need I even say more!?

12. shoe store
High heels and tennis shoes and cleats, oh my! Are your trademark boots too worn to wear anymore? Are you taking a stop here to try something new? Or maybe you're just here to try on the heels and make fun of the latest in women's footwear! Either way, this is a great way to mess around with friends - and make fun of them for their gross taste in shoes.

13. sports store
Balls - balls everywhere. This is the place for heavy, outdoors clothing, and it's a sport's shounen's dream! Everything from fishing supplies to goalie gear lines the walls; and it's perfect for that sporty girl you wanna impress!

14. gas station
A quick stop on a roadtrip, and the best place to get innard rotting junk food - the gas station always has everything you need on hand at the time! Mess around with your friends, grab a couple bags of chips, get a couple slurpies - it's an awesome way to spend a summer afternoon! Just don't make too much of a mess!

15. liquor store
The finest wines, the best beers in town, and even heavy liquor for the hardier of the drinkers, this is the place to get stocked up before the big football game, or to get the wine to complete that last dish! But hey - are you even old enough to be shopping here!?

16. dollar store
Cheap toys, pencil toppers, plastic jewelry - this place is a dream for little kids and collectors alike! Sure, some of the toys may look a little cruddy, and maybe the candy's a little old and stale; but it's all only a dollar! Who can say no to a bargain like that!?

17. lingerie aisle
Oh la la~ Shopping for your girlfriend, boys? Or maybe you're just looking? Perhaps you're a couple of girls who decided to do one trip together! Careful kiddos - this aisle's a little too risque for you!

[Normally, Naoto would not step foot into one of these places, but when you run out of coffee at home and it's too close to grocery shopping day to pick up some more, you have to make do.

She's not ordering anything just yet, however, she's looking at the mugs and thermoses. She doesn't need anything else to spend her money on, but... She hardly notices when she nearly bumps into someone nearby.]

Ah... my apologies.

[Zanya wasn't really a coffee addict so much as a connoisseur. It made him feel sophisticated to stop and have an espresso once in awhile as a small indulgence. Today was one of his indulgence days, and he's perusing the retail as he waits for his order to be ready.

Of course he's busy looking at something and spacing out a little when someone comes up behind him and bumps him gently.]

Ah-My apologies as well. I wasn't paying attention-

[He doesn't look at the other person right away, instead taking time to step away and make sure he didn't knock anything over first.]

[And then he does look at her, and realizes she's a she through some magical phobia-driven radar that he has and proceeds to tenderly panic.]

I-I didn't mean to get in the way, bam, I mean ma'am! P-please excuse me....

[Oh god he touched a girl he touched a girl and there's nothing to hide behind and he knows that's rude and that she's a human being but oh god]

[buzzkilldetective]

[The reaction catches her off-guard and she instinctively steps back a bit. That sure was... panic.]

Ah, um, well... [.... She's not entirely certain how to react to this. She doesn't look like a ma'am, seriously--!!! After taking another step back, holding her hands up in a placating gesture.]

... Are you alright? [Gee, I wonder, Naoto.]

[Oh god oh god and now she's uncomfortable and he's being rude. Get yourself together, Kisaragi.

At least she's moved away a bit. Yeah, that's better. He takes a few calming breaths and tries to fix his body language. A little.]

Um... Yes, sorry. You just. Startled me. Forgive my rude actions.

[He's still blushing and not looking in her face, though.]

[She lowers her hands, allowing one to slip into a pocket, and softly exhales.]

It's fine. I guess I didn't quite expect that kind of reaction. [People will never fail to surprise her, it seems...] ... And "ma'am" is entirely unnecessary, I'm only sixteen.

[His own hands are fluttering around nervously. They eventually find purchase in his elbows as he crosses his arms, trying both to protect himself and keep himself calm.

It's fine, you're fine. This is good practice. Have to talk to girls out in the real world.... he's trying to convince himself. Can you see him vibrating, Naoto?]

N-no I'm sure you didn't.

[You babbling idiot.]

I figured it was best to be polite, seeing as I don't know you, and did just offend you. Most likely.

[Oh my god save him pls]

[Her free hand comes up to play with the brim of her hat, pulling it down ever so slightly.] I wasn't offended at all.

[... now what? --oh, right, probably ought to apologize for scaring the poor guy out of his wits...] I'm truly sorry for startling you. Perhaps I could buy you coffee to make up for it?

[big_z]

[He actually relaxed a bit more when she pulls her hat down. It covers her face a bit and that makes it easier.]

G-good! I meant no offense.

[His panicking usually seems to upset girls anyway, so that's a relief. Oh. Oh no. She wants to buy him coffee. Vibrating intensifies.]

I-It's really all right, it happens to me a lot... N-not that I'm a scaredy cat! [How even does he explain this without coming across like a huge ween.

Spoilers, he can't.]

You don't have to do that! I... I guess I won't turn it down if you insist. [It would be rude to not accept a gift.]

[buzzkilldetective]

I'm surprised you could even tell, anyway. [She did have an entire small town fooled for months, after all. She won't ask about it happening a lot--it's likely a personal matter and thus none of her business.

She offers him a small (albeit somewhat awkward) smile and nods towards the counter.] Shall we, then?

[big_z]

Really?

[He supposed, talking another look at her, that she isn't particularly feminine. In face she could even be described as masculine, in a quiet sort of way. He shrugs.]

S-sure.

[He follows a little bit behind her, still very tense, but trying his hardest. Bless his heart does he try.] Just a double espresso, please.

[buzzkilldetective]

[Most would mistake her for a young boy, at first glance. This stranger being able to tell right away was quite the change of pace.

She nods, turning to the barista, parroting his order before adding her own, caffè macchiato. Once she pays for both of the drinks, she moves out of the way.] Nothing to do for now but wait. [Shouldn't take too long, but...]

[It's like his secret superpower, or something.

What a bullshit superpower.]

Thank you, again. It's very kind of you.

[He's still not looking at her face, but at least the stuttering is calming down. Desensitization: go?]

[buzzkilldetective]

It's no problem. It's the least I could do after startling you like that. [She offers a smile, even if he's still not looking.]

... Naoto Shirogane, by the way. [She's not sure if the name will ring a bell--most people had heard the name of the 'Detective Prince', but there were some who hadn't.]

[big_z]

[That almost gets him to laugh. It wasn't really her fault; but he didn't want to go into that. He's about to offer her his own name when her's does, in fact, ring a bell.

And now he's going to freak out again.]

N...Naoto.... The Naoto Shirogane?

[Now he's looking at her face again, but with an entirely different kind of panic all over it: the star-struck kind.]

[buzzkilldetective]

That would be me, yes.

[... if she gets any of that "I was expecting someone taller" nonsense, she swears to god--]

[That's so cool

He fights the sudden urge to fanboy really hard and instead coughs into his hand to keep his composure.]

I'm a very big fan of your work. I-It's a pleasure to meet you in person.

[Shit there goes the stuttering again.]

[buzzkilldetective]

I... I see...

[Suddenly, she's awkward all over again, almost like she's not entirely sure how to handle this. There's still something of a pleased air about her.] It's nice to meet you too... ah...?

[He never did introduce himself, after all...]

[If they aren't careful there's going to be some mobius reacharound of awkwardness happening here.]

Oh! My apologies all over again! I'm Zanya Kisaragi.

[He bows a very short and stiff bow, now thoroughly embarrassed.]

[buzzkilldetective]

[She returns the bow briefly.] Kisaragi-san, then.

[Before the two of them manage to make it any more awkward, a "One double espresso and one macchiato!" rings out over the low buzz of the cafe. Silently thanking her lucky stars, Naoto quickly dismisses herself to grab the drinks.]

[It's a very very good thing the drinks came out when they did, because it let Zanya have a moment to briefly hyperventilate about the fact that Naoto Shirogane is calling him Kisaragi-san.

He's going to die, he's sure of it.

He's all nervous shakes and blushing when he reconnects with her at whatever table she's decided to sit at.]

Th-thanks.

[buzzkilldetective]

[Naoto's a lot more collected once she's seated and she nudges Zanya's double espresso towards him.]

It's no problem at all.

[She'll happily lapse into silence now to enjoy her drink.]

[All right, he'll just handle the freaking out for both of them. Or something. That's how that works right?

His hands are unsteady as he takes the espresso cup to his lips. It has to be drunk quickly, of course. At least Naoto doesn't seem to want to press him for conversation right now.

He prays he won't spill it on himself.]
